RBarc/Datamatrix for SAP® Systems

RBarc/Datamatrix is an ABAP® program that can be used to automatically generate 2D-barcodes of the types Datamatrix and GS1 Datamatrix on SAP®-systems.

The program is – similar to Rbarc+ and Rbarc/PDF417 - an SAP® Include written in ABAP and is only installed on the SAP® Application Server.

RBarc/Datamatrix can be used for any output type (SAP® device types) and any output path (SAP® connectivity) of SAP® documents:

  • Printing,
  • faxing,
  • mailing,
  • archiving,
  • conversion into PDF,
  • etc.

The program is characterized through the following properties:

RBarc/Datamatrix works independent from the operating system on which the SAP®-system was installed.

  • RBarc/Datamatrix operates on all ABAP-based SAP®-systems, such as R/3, mySAP, NetWeaver and SAP® ERP.
  • RBarc/Datamatrix can be used with SAPscript as well as with Smart Forms and Interactive Forms by Adobe®.
  • RBarc/Datamatrix on-the-fly creates Datamatrix barcodes within the SAP®-system, so that these can be issued on all SAP® device types that support a graphics output. Among others, these are printers, faxes, archiving systems, mails, PDF files, etc.
  • RBarc/Datamatrix adheres to the ISO Norm 16022 and supports the following features:
    • Datamatrix Symbol Norm ECC-200
    • GS1 Datamatrix Norm
    • Free selection of the module size.
    • All of the 30 symbol versions determined in ISO 16022 that relate to the module composition (also non-square sizes).
    • Automatic check-digit calculation according to Reed-Solomon-Codes.
    • Encryption of ASCII-data, binary data, ASCI-Hex-Codes and special characters, such as for example FNC1, 05_Macro and 06_Macro.
    • Fixed or automatic selection of the barcode size.

RBarc/Datamatrix was conceived in such a way that with this program, the requirements of the different trades, industries, groupings and organizations, such as the VDA (Association of German Automobile Industry), can be realized that reach beyond the barcode specifications. For example, data can be encrypted that cannot be entered through the keyboard, but have to be encrypted at certain locations in the data stream to fulfill various specification requirements. Among these are for example the characters FNC1, GS, RS and EOT.

This Datamatrix barcode was developed in the USA in 1989 and is one of the 2D barcodes most used for industrial applications. It can be found printed on invoices and delivery notes, as a postal stamp or stamped into various components, on tools and circuit boards. The smallest modules – mostly square ones – represent bit information. The Datamatrix barcode can be read in all directions (omnidirectionally), meaning it can be fixed upon the carrier material in any possible direction. Search pattern is an L-shaped line, consisting of alternating black and white modules. With increasing size, alignment lines are added that are dividing the barcode into single rectangles. The smallest barcode variant consists of one, the largest, however, of 36 squares, that are divided up by the alignment lines.

RBarc/Datamatrix supports all of the 30 versions defined in ISO Norm 16022 that show a differing size and data capacity. Among the 30 specified sizes, 24 are square and 6 are rectangular. The Datamatrix data capacity consists of between 3 and 1558 codewords. Codewords are encryption units that encrypt one or more characters, according to the data type (numerical, alphanumerical, binary or mixed). The data capacity of the Datamatrix code consists of up to 3116 numerical, 2335 alphanumerical or 1556 binary characters. In case different data types are mixed, the actual amount of data that can be encrypted results from a mixed calculation.

In case of an adequate screen resolution, the barcode created with RBarc/Datamatrix can be read directly from the screen of an SAP® print preview using a Smartphone and a suitable APP (e.g. the free i-nigma APP).

The program can be used with SAPscript, Smart Forms as well as with Interactive Forms forms.

Further properties:

  • Several variables from different form fields can be encrypted in a barcode Datamatrix label in just one step.
  • Via parameters, the barcode size can be set at a constant - regardless of the amount of data to be encrypted.
  • The encryption of fonts not displayable in the SAP® System is fully supported. Therefore, this program is especially suited for the implementation of the Postage Paid Stamp using the Datamatrix of the Deutsche Post AG
  • Together with our special reports, the program is also especially suited for the implementation of an EDI marker on documents.
  • RBarc/Datamatrix guarantees the fulfilling of all necessary specification features for the automotive area.
