UPC-A Symbols

The 12-digit UPC-A code is the standard version in the USA and Canada for all consumable and expendable goods offered in wholesale and retail businesses. The UPC-A Code is similar to the code EAN-13. The fist digit, read from left to right, is the system indicator; the following five digits represent the manufacturer number, again followed by the five-digit product number, closed by the single-digit check digit. The UPC-A symbol (VBCD: UPC-A), read from left to right, is composed as follows:

  • One leading Quiet Zone
  • one normal guard bar,
  • 6 functional characters from character set A,
  • one Center Pattern,
  • 6 functional characters from character set C, whereby the last functional character represents the check-digit which is automatically generated by the "Visual Bar Code Designer",
  • one normal guard bar,
  • one closing quiet zone.
  • Below the barcode character, the UPC-A symbol contains a human readable display of the information encoded in the UPC symbol, written in OCR-B font. Left of the left guard bar, the numbering system character "0" is displayed. Right of the right guard bar, the check digit (symbol check character) is displayed.
