MaxiCode

Origin

The MaxiCode was developed by UPS in 1989 for a quicker identification, follow-up and sorting of parcels. The Maxi Code is standardized with AIM International as „International Symbology SpecificationMaxiCode“.

  • A very safe code, due to the included error recovery algorithms.
  • Omni-directional readability at high transportation speeds.

  • Only readable with image processing reading devices.

Symbol Properties

  • The MaxiCode symbol has a pre-defined size of 25.4 mm x 25.4 mm (1in. x 1in.). The area thus created can be filled with 144 encoded symbol characters, i.e. 93 ASCII-characters or 138 figures. In the center of the code the search pattern can be found, consisting of three concentric circles. Arranged around that search pattern, there are 866 honeycomb-shaped hexagons in 33 rows.

Check Digits & Data Security

The Reed-Solomon Error Correction user-specific supports several different security levels and offers a high data security. A successful reconstruction is even possible when up to 25% of the code is destroyed.
