Barcode-Glossary

ISSN

The International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) is based upon the barcode EAN/UPC - similar to the ISBN. It serves as a means of standard identification for periodically appearing publications. To enable the ISSN-number to be displayed with the EAN-Code, special conventions are in use (this is done in accordance with the "European Association for Article Numbering", located in Brussels). As EAN principally demands a country code, here the number 977 was mutually agreed upon. The ISBN-number is printed as human readable text above the barcode. Below the barcode, the EAN-number resulting from the above mentioned conventions is printed. Users of the "Visual Bar Code Designer" only need to know their ISSN-number. The corresponding EAN-Code is then automatically generated by the "Visual Bar Code Designer". In the additional module (see the description of EAN), the number of the periodical is encoded.
