Barcode-Glossary

EAN-13 Symbols

The 13-digit EAN Code is the European standard version for all consumable and expendable goods offered in wholesale and retail businesses. The first two digits, read from left to right, contain the country code; the following five digits represent the manufacturer number, followed by the five-digit product number, closed by the single-digit check digit. The EAN-13 symbol (VBCD: EAN/JAN-13), read from left to right, is composed as follows:

  • One leading Quiet Zone
  • one normal guard bar,
  • 6 functional characters made up of the character sets A und B,
  • one Center Pattern, 6 functional characters from the character set C, in which case the last functional character represents the Check Digit and is automatically generated by the "Visual Bar Code Designer",
  • one normal guard bar,
  • a closing quiet zone.
  • Below the barcode character, the EAN-13 symbol contains a human readable display of the information encoded in the EAN-Symbol, written in OCR-B font. The 13. character from the right (encoded in the left functional character field due to a parity exchange) is displayed left of the left guard bar.
