EAN-8 Symbols
The eight-digit EAN code is a short version, meant for low-volume articles. As the diversity in numbers is limited, each manufacturer has to give special proof for requiring an eight-digit EAN code. The first two numbers, read from left to right, represent the country code, followed by the five-digit product number and the single-digit check digit. The EAN-8 symbol (VBCD: EAN/JAN-8), read from left to right, is composed as follows:
- One leading Quiet Zone,
- one normal guard bar,
- 4 functional characters from the character set A
- one dividing character
- 4 functional characters from the character set C, whereby the last functional character represents the check digit which is automatically generated by the "Visual Bar Code Designer",
- one normal guard bar,
- one closing Quiet Zone
- Below the barcode character, the EAN-8 symbol contains a human readable display of the information encoded in the EAN-Symbol, written in OCR-B font.
